Ka`u man sentenced in drunk driving fatality

A Ka`u man has received the maximum prison term for a 2010 drunk driving crash in south Kona that killed one woman and injured two others. Kona Circuit Judge Ron Ibarra this week sentenced 28-year old Robert William Smith Jr. of Ocean View to serve consecutive terms of up to 10 years in prison for first-degree negligent homicide and up to 5 years for habitually operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicant. Smith pled guilty to the charges in December. The crash claimed the life of 31-year old Stella Corona of Kealakekua.
