Matayoshi: Hawaii making school reform progress

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii schools Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi says the state is making progress with reforms it's carrying out using a $75 million "Race to the Top" grant.

Matayoshi is confident this progress will lead U.S. Department of Education officials to remove Hawaii's grant from "high-risk" status.

Matayoshi issued the statement Friday as federal officials put out a report evaluating reforms implemented by 12 grant recipients.

The report recognized Hawaii's progress in turning around low-performing schools and expanding instruction in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Hawaii still needs to establish new teacher evaluations that reflect student achievement. Hawaii must also follow through with plans to tie teacher compensation to performance.

"High-risk" status means Hawaii could lose grant money if it doesn't do a better job of implementing reforms.
