Kulani meeting set for tonight in Kea`au

A second public meeting on a proposal to re-open Hawai`i Island’s Kulani Correctional Facility, which was closed in 2009 as a cost-saving measure will be held today. The state is targeting a July 1, 2014 date for re-opening the facility, which could be used to house 200 of the Hawai`i inmates who are currently incarcerated on the mainland and keep more than $5 million a year spent elsewhere in the islands. Today’s hearing is set for 5:00 p.m. at the Kea`au Community Center.
