Company withdraws low bid for Palamanui project

By Associated Press

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (AP) The construction company that submitted the low bid for the Hawaii Community College at Palamanui project has pulled out.

West Hawaii Today says Big Island legislators sent a letter to University of Hawaii President MRC Greenwood about the situation.

West Hawaii Rep. Denny Coffman says Nan Inc. had submitted a bid of $21.5 million. That bid was about $4 million more than the university and a private developer had set aside for the first phase. Coffman says the next lowest bid, from F&H Construction, was for about $25.5 million, leaving the $8 million gap between funding and cost.

The university announced last August that construction was expected to take 15 to 18 months, with the campus opening for classes as early as the fall semester of 2014.
