Hawaii principals, DOE agree on new evaluations

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) The union representing Hawaii public school principals and the state Department of Education have reached an agreement on evaluations.

The department said Thursday the evaluations will rate principals on student outcomes and leadership.

The evaluations will assess the professional growth and learning of principals, their school planning and progress, school culture, professional qualities and instructional leadership and stakeholder support and engagement.

State Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi says the evaluations are a collaborative effort between the department and the union, the Hawaii Government Employees Association. She says they both aim to elevate school leadership.

Principals will receive the new evaluations during the next school year. The department will use feedback to refine the system the following school year.

Principals and complex area superintendents will be trained on the evaluations this year.
