Search turns up no sign of drowning victim

By Associated Press

LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) — A search for a San Francisco man presumed drowned off Kauai has been unsuccessful.

Kauai Fire Department officials say aerial searches were made Monday in an effort to find the body of 47-year-old Brian Baker. Fire personnel also were positioned along the coastline.

Officials say Baker was swept into the water off South Kalihiwai Point on Friday by a rogue wave. He and several friends had hiked to a remote and rocky coastal area just south of Kalihiwai Bay when Baker was swept away by the wave.

His friend, 46-year-old Adam Griffiths, also of San Francisco, jumped into the choppy waters in an effort to save his friend and also drowned. His body was recovered Saturday.

Kauai remained Tuesday under a high surf warning for north and west-facing shores.
