WAILUKU, Hawaii (AP) — Members of the Wailuku community don't like the idea of removing concrete modules that were mistakenly dropped on coral within the Keawakapu artificial reef three years ago off South Maui.
Cole Keaoulu Santos says there are better ways to spend $400,000. Santos works for the county Department of Water Supply and is a scuba instructor. He thinks the money should be used to expand the reef rather than remove the modules.
The Maui News says others at last week's meeting expressed concern that trying to remove the modules could actually cause more damage to the coral.
In December 2009, almost 5 acres of live coral had some 125 slabs of concrete accidentally placed on it during a reef expansion project.
