Hearing delayed for accused jail escapees

HILO, Hawaii (AP) — Defense lawyers for two men accused of escaping a jail on the Big Island have been granted a delay. West Hawaii Today reports that preliminary hearings for 35-year-old Jarvis Naoki Higa and 31-year-old Ryan James Jeffries-Hamar are now scheduled for Feb. 11. The two men are accused of assaulting a guard, stealing a car and escaping from Hawaii Community Correctional Center on Dec. 5. One of the men was apprehended two days later; the other more than a week later. They were moved to Halawa Correctional Facility on Oahu.
