High surf advisory posted for Maui, Big Island

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) — Rough water off some of Hawaii's shores has led to a high surf advisory and the closure of at least one bay.

The National Weather Service says strong trade winds will push the surf up to 12 feet along east facing shores of Maui and the Big Island, and an advisory for those shorelines and the east facing coasts of Kauai, Oahu and Molokai remains in effect through 6 p.m. Sunday.

The service says beachgoers can expect breaking waves and strong rip currents.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports officials closed Hanauma Bay Saturday morning because the high surf was making for treacherous conditions. Officials will decide Sunday whether it's safe to reopen.
