Kona brush fire burns 5 acres

Children playing with fireworks are thought to have caused a brush fire on Saturday which burned about 5 acres mauka of Kuakini Highway in Kailua-Kona. Firefighters responding to a 3:39 p.m. alarm say children reportedly shot fire rockets into the dry trees and grass area about 100 yards north of Duarte Apartments. The first units were on scene by 3:45 p.m. and had the fire under control by 5:00 p.m.
