HILO, Hawaii (AP) — A manhunt is under way for a suspect who shot and wounded two Big Island police officers Wednesday night.
Police say the officers were shot shortly before 9 p.m. while investigating a report of gunfire in Hilo.
Hawaii Police Chief Harry Kubojiri said both officers had undergone surgery at Hilo Medical Center and were in stable condition.
Police said the officers spotted a man hiding under a parked car. When the officers approached, the man fired at them. One of the officers returned fire, but it was not known if the man was injured. He managed to run away.
The officers, one 40 years old and the other 31 years old, suffered gunshot wounds to their legs.
Kubojiri said the gunman is believed to be a local man.
