HONOLULU (AP) — The National Weather Service is changing its high surf warnings and advisories for Hawaii, with the goal of giving the public more detailed information.
The changes are expected as early as this week, and will label the overall threat as extreme, very high, high, or moderate. In addition, the messages also will explain the major threats that should be expected. The weather service's Mike Cantin says examples of this include risk of death or injury to inexperienced swimmers and minor road inundation in prone areas.
He says the goal is give the public better information to help them make better decisions.
The new messaging is a joint effort between the weather service and local officials across the state.
