HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii Senate President Shan Tsutsui is first in line to replace Lt. Gov. Brian Schatz, after he was appointed to the late U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye's seat on Wednesday.
Gov. Neil Abercrombie says Tsutsui would be an "extraordinarily capable" lieutenant governor, but he doesn't know whether the Wailuku-Kahului Democrat will accept the new role. Abercrombie says the law states only that Tsutsui must make a decision on whether to assume the post "promptly."
Tsutsui says he plans to discuss the prospect with his family before deciding.
Schatz was selected by Abercrombie after the Democratic Party gave him a list of three candidates that included U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa and Esther Kiaaina, a deputy director in the state Department of Land and Natural Resources.
