HONOLULU (AP) — The late Sen. Daniel Inouye played a critical role in securing federal funds for projects throughout Hawaii.
He used his influence to help save the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard from closing. He helped Hawaii emerge as a premier location for the study of astronomy, marine biology and other sciences. He helped preserve a Big Island forest home to native plants and endangered birds.
Inouye's work made him a pillar of Hawaii's economy along with tourism, defense and construction.
His passing on Monday means Hawaii is not only mourning the loss of a senator but is also bracing and preparing for what his loss will mean for jobs and the environment in the longer term.
State Sen. Glenn Wakai says Hawaii is now facing an "economic storm."
