HONOLULU (AP) — The U.S. attorney's office says a former Maui County resident is going to prison for tax evasion.
Seventy-three-year-old Michael Eric Stewart was sentenced this week to two years in prison and ordered to pay restitution of more than $476,000 to the Internal Revenue Service.
Prosecutors said Stewart, who owned a mortgage company on Maui, earned income from soliciting mortgage loans between 2001 and 2006. But they said he did not file tax returns from 1997 through 2006 until August 2007. And the IRS claimed Stewart owed more than $476,000 in taxes for those years.
Stewart also was accused of transferring income earned through the mortgage business into other bank accounts.
Prosecutors said he moved to Panama in 2008.
