LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) — Kauai police are posting online a recording of a scam artist trying to trick Police Chief Darryl Perry into wiring him $400.
The caller telephoned Perry but didn't realize he was talking to the police chief.
He told the police chief he won a $250,000 cashier's check that would be sent to him. But he said Perry first needed to send him 1 percent of the "tax" he would owe for the award.
The caller told Perry to use Western Union to wire the money to someone in New York.
Kauai police recorded the 16-minute conversation and posted it on YouTube.
Perry said Thursday the police want to help the public understand how con artists operate. Kauai police are urging the public to be especially cautious during the holidays.
