The Hawai’i County Police Department has been awarded accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc., (CALEA). The coveted award was presented to Chief Harry Kubojiri and other police officials during the organization’s fall conference in Jacksonville, Florida, November 17th. The Department began seeking accreditation in 2004 and began a 36-month period of self-assessment, followed in 2010 by a site visit. The visiting team found that the department was in compliance with more than 400 applicable standards and awarded it high marks for its commitment to CALEA Accreditation. To remain accredited, the department must maintain compliance with the applicable
standards and undergo a new CALEA assessment every three years. Only about 1,200 of the roughly 23,000 law enforcement agencies in the United States have been awarded CALEA Accreditation.
