Police investigate apparent drowning

A California woman apparently drowned Thursday (November 15) in waters along the South Kohala coast. Police arriving on scene at Beach 69 in Puako shortly after 12:00 p.m. say bystanders had pulled an unresponsive snorkeler from the water and attempted to revive her pending the arrival of Fire personnel. The victim, identified as 70-year old Eileen Melville of Mid Valley, California was taken to North Hawai`i Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 1:17 pm. Police have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
