HILO, Hawaii (AP) — A program to test space vehicles on the Big Island is gearing up.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser says the state is putting a new investment of $2.34 million into the Pacific International Space Center for Exploration Systems (PISCES) to help the program prepare for missions to Mars or the moon.
Rob Kelso is the center's new director. He says the long-term goal is to establish the center as a high-tech park in Hawaii for research into technologies related to space travel and colonization.
Kelso says in the near-term, researchers will look into a number of areas, including a project to develop a concrete-like building material that can be used in space and back on Earth.
