HONOLULU (AP) — University of Hawaii economists say economic growth continues to lag for industries other than tourism.
The university's Economic Research Organization said in a report Friday that Hawaii added a net 6,500 jobs since the beginning of the year. But almost half of those positions were in the accommodation and food service sector.
Economists have been expecting the construction industry to recover. But the report says construction has yet to decisively rebound.
Hawaii had an average of 1 percent fewer construction jobs in the first eight months of the year compared to the same period in 2011.
But the report says there are hints this will change. It pointed to figures showing there were 6 percent more construction jobs in August than the recent low marked in November last year.
