Memorial held for veteran who inspired with vote

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) — A memorial service is being held for a World War II veteran who inspired people across the nation with his determination to vote even though he was dying of cancer.

Frank Tanabe's memorial will be held at St. Andrew's Cathedral in Honolulu on Friday. An inurnment ceremony with full military honors will follow at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, or Punchbowl.

Tanabe died last week at the age of 93.

A photo of him filling out his absentee ballot with the help of his daughter was seen by millions after his grandson posted it online.

The image prompted many to thank Tanabe for his service and praise his patriotism.

Tanabe served in the Military Intelligence Service after volunteering for the Army from an internment camp in California.
