HONOLULU (AP) — A prisoner accused of escaping a Honolulu court building by climbing into the ceiling has been recaptured.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports Darius Puni-Mau was recaptured outside a Pali grocery store Thursday morning, less than 24 hours after he allegedly escaped the Circuit Court building.
Law enforcement authorities think that Puni-Mau entered the courthouse's third-floor ceiling above the interview room where inmates talk to their lawyers. It appears he crawled about 40 feet before dropping down into a utility closet and walking out a nearby exit.
State Sheriff Shawn Tsuha says his division is reviewing what happened. The division also is consulting with the operator of the court building to better secure the interview room.
