HONOLULU (AP) — Law enforcement officials say a prisoner has escaped from the state Circuit Court building in Honolulu by climbing into the ceiling above a secure room.
Sheriff Shawn Tsuha told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser that Wednesday's escape was "unprecedented."
Department of Public Safety officials say Darius Punimau apparently climbed into the third-floor ceiling above a secure room where prisoners can talk to their lawyers. Officials think he crawled about 40 feet, dropped down into a utility room and walked out a nearby exit.
However, just in case Punimau remains in the building, more deputies were assigned to remain inside the courthouse and at all of the exits overnight into Thursday morning when court employees return to work.
Punimau was at court for a probation revocation hearing.
