Hawaii visitor arrivals, spending continue rising

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) — The Hawaii Tourism Authority says 6 percent more people traveled to Hawaii in September compared to the same month last year. Visitors to the islands spent almost 16 percent more while they were here compared to last year.

HTA President Mike McCartney says the agency is pleased the rate of spending growth hasn't weakened even though the number of travelers increased more slowly.

More than 595,000 visitors came to Hawaii in September and spent $1.1 billion while they were here.

More travelers came from the U.S. West region, but fewer arrived from the Eastern region. More visited from Japan, through travelers from Canada declined.

The agency aims to have a record 7.9 million visitors travel to Hawaii this year. It's also aiming for visitor spending to hit $13.9 billion.
