Hawaii asks hunters to hunt Big Island deer

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) — State officials are encouraging hunters to help them eradicate axis deer on the Big Island.

The announcement comes after the Board of Land and Natural Resources voted Friday to allow licensed hunters to kill deer on public land on the Big Island without getting a special permit.

The state says there will be no restrictions on the days or seasons that deer may be hunted and no limits on the numbers that may be taken.

Hunters will still need to a valid hunting license and hunt only during daylight hours. They'll also need landowner permission to hunt on private land.

The Big Island Invasive Species Committee is trying to eradicate deer on the island so the animals don't harm farms, ranches and forests.
