HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaiian Electric Co. is seeking approval to buy liquid biofuel for power generation, but the public wants to weigh in before the utility gets the go-ahead.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser says the utility's first proposal was rejected as being too costly for ratepayers. The public wants the opportunity to speak out on the revised plan this week.
HECO and its Hawaiian Electric Light Co. subsidiary on Hawaii island are seeking approval from the Public Utilities Commission to buy 16 million gallons of liquid biofuel fuel per year for 20 years. The liquid biofuel would be bought from Aina Koa Pono LLC at a fixed price. But even at the lower cost of the revised plan, it would be more expensive than generating power with diesel.
