HONOLULU (AP) — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says Maui County has agreed to build a system to collect gases generated by decomposing landfill trash.
The EPA said Wednesday the Central Maui Landfill system will cost the county $4.5 million. Maui will also pay a nearly $400,000 fine.
The settlement resolves EPA allegations that the county violated the Clean Air Act by failing to operate a gas collection and control system at the Puunene landfill. The EPA says the county also failed to apply for a state Health Department permit.
The settlement requires the county to boost its monitoring efforts to reduce the threat of underground landfill fires.
The EPA says federal law requires large landfills to install and operate systems to collect gases.
