HONOLULU (AP) — The Army is considering putting Stryker armored vehicles on the Big Island as part of a re-positioning plan around Asia and the Pacific.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports that Stryker vehicles would come from existing stock at Schofield Barracks, or those remaining at the end of the Iraq War and the U.S. involvement in Afghanistan slated for 2014.
The Army says it is considering putting the Stryker vehicles at Pohakuloa Training Area, but must first look more closely at the feasibility of the move.
Stryker vehicles now are shipped back and forth from Schofield Barracks to the Big Island as troops train.
Jim Guzior, a spokesman for U.S. Army Pacific at Fort Shafter, says pre-positioning the Stryker vehicles at the Pohakuloa Training Area would reduce training costs.
