Hawaii flags to fly at half-staff for senator

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) — Gov. Neil Abercrombie is ordering all national and state flags at the state offices and Hawaii National Guard grounds to be flown at half-staff in honor of Sen. Arlen Specter from Pennsylvania who passed away over the weekend.

The order is in effect from sunrise to sunset on Tuesday, the day of Specter's funeral in Penn Valley, Pa.

Abercrombie's order comes after President Barack Obama issued a proclamation doing the same for all national flags at federal buildings and grounds.

Specter died Sunday at the age of 82 after spending much of his career in the U.S. Senate warning of the dangers of political intolerance.
