Hikers safely exit Mauna Loa Summit

Six hikers ranging from their early 40’s to mid 50’s are safe and sound today after getting lost Saturday above the weather station at the summit of Mauna Loa. Fire rescue personnel were notified by cell phone around 5:30 p.m. that 5 hikers were lost and unable to find their way down, while a 6th person had left the group and was missing. The hikers were located by County helicopter and transported back to the weather station by fire personnel from the county and Pohakuloa Training Area. The 6th member walked out on his own. All refused medical treatment.
