LAIE, Hawaii (AP) — The state is temporarily closing a beach park near Laie so technicians may conduct a controlled underwater demolition of unexploded ordnance found nearby.
The Department of Land and Natural Resources will close Malaekahana State Recreation Area from daybreak to 4 p.m. on Thursday. Officers will also control ocean access to the area.
Technicians working for the Army Corps of Engineers will conduct the demolition in waters surrounding Pulemoku Rock.
The Corps found the ordnance during an investigation at formerly used defense sites.
The site off northeastern Oahu consists of four small, uninhabited islands between Laie and Kahuku. The islands are Mokuauia, also known as Goat Island, Kihewamoku, Mokualai and Pulemoku Rock.
