Police say they’ve received numerous calls this week about a possible telephone scam involving a caller claiming to be a Microsoft technician, with most of the activity occurring in the Kona Mauka area. The bogus technician claims he is calling to protect the victim from a computer virus, then instructs the person to log onto their computer and follow specific instructions which can result in the caller obtaining access to personal information. In some cases, the caller asks for credit card information. Police have confirmed that Microsoft does not make such calls to customers and says you should never provide information over the phone without first verifying the caller’s identity and validity of the call’s purpose.
