Puna Community dedicates solar powered pool

The Hawaiian Shores Community Association celebrated the re-opening of its community association swimming pool on Saturday and made history at the same time. The pool is the first of its kind in the nation to run exclusively on a solar powered pump system. Association President Eileen O`Hara said the community is already reaping the benefits. “We’re happy because we just got our first utility bill that shows a month without electricity,” O’Hara said. “And we saved ourselves $1,170.” O’Hara said her organization was first contacted about the opportunity to undertake the project last year.
