Mayor Billy Kenoi and former Mayor Harry Kim discussed a wide range of topics during Friday’s candidate’s forum at the University of Hawai`i at Hilo. Both spoke favorably of
waste-to-energy as a potential remedy for managing the island’s solid waste as the East Hawai`i landfill nears its capacity. They also came out in support of geothermal energy with close government oversight. But they appeared to clash over the Community Development Planning program Kim started when he was Mayor. Kim said he was unhappy the administration had not fully embraced it, while Kenoi said Community Development plans cannot supersede services everybody expects every day.
