HONOLULU (AP) — An attorney for a kayak tour company that had its permit revoked on Friday after a teen was swept out to sea on the Big Island will get a chance to make his case next month.
Hawaii Pack and Paddle attorney Bob Frame asked the Hawaii Board of Land and Natural Resources for more time to talk with witnesses and piece together what happened.
Frame suggested the teens or the Colorado guides along for the trip pressured the local guides to deviate from the planned route.
The company will still be operating when the state board holds the meeting on Oct. 12 because the revocation doesn't take effect for 30 days.
The state Department of Land and Natural Resources had recommended revoking the permit after three violations on July 4, when 15-year-old Tyler Madoff was swept away by large waves. His body was never found, and he is presumed dead.
