Motorist in double traffic fatality released from custody

Police have released a 30-year old Honoka`a man arrested in the Monday traffic deaths of two Kea`au women pending further investigation. Police say Alfred Berdon III was operating a Nissan pickup truck heading east on Mamalahoa Highway that overtook a Ford passenger van with nine people aboard and forced it into a gulch east of the 39-mile Marker between Honoka`a and Paauilo. 61-year old Josefina B. Visaya and 54-year old
Patrocinia R. Cadang died from injuries they received in the two-vehicle crash. Berdon faces a variety of potential charges including multiple counts of negligent homicide, negligent injury and driving under the influence of an intoxicant.
