HONOKAA, Hawaii (AP) — Big Island police believe alcohol and speed were factors in a crash that killed two women when their van was forced off the road into an embankment.
Sixty-one-year-old Josefina Visaya and 54-year-old Patrocinia Cadang were killed in Monday's crash in Honokaa.
Police say a Nissan pickup truck overtook the van on Mamalahoa Highway. The truck driver was arrested for negligent homicide, operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant and other crimes.
The van driver and two passengers were treated for minor injuries. A woman was flown to a Honolulu hospital while two other women were taken to local hospitals in critical condition. A man was in stable condition.
This is the island's 28th and 29th traffic fatality this year, compared with 15 at the same time last year.
