Hawaii pays benefits to man dead for 20 years

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii has paid nearly $400,000 in worker's compensation benefits to a former Kauai man who has been dead for more than 20 years.

Hawaii News Now reports a federal indictment alleges Edwin Callison's daughter was able to continue collecting his checks by forging his signature on a state document verifying his eligibility to receive the benefits.

Callison began collecting the benefits in 1976, after getting hurt while working for the Kauai Humane Society. He died in California in 1990.

His daughter Lynsie Williams of Redlands, Calif., was recently indicted by a federal grand jury.

State Rep. Carl Rhoads says it's embarrassing it went undetected for so long.

Williams could not be reached for comment. Her attorney declined to comment. She's expected to be arraigned Oct. 2.
