North Hawai`i teen killed in pedestrian accident

Police have identified the teenager killed when struck by a semi-trailer truck while crossing the intersection of Highway 19 and Paauilo Makai Road Friday evening as 17-year old John DeLuz of Paauilo. DeLuz attempted to cross the road in front of the Hele-On bus he had exited, when he was hit by an eastbound 1988 International semi tractor-trailer. Paramedics arrived at the scene just before 5:45 p.m. to find him on the side of the road with multiple injuries and no sign of life. He was taken to North Hawai`i Community Hospital in critical condition and pronounced dead at 6:37 p.m. The 22-year-old driver of the semi truck was not injured.
