Fire destroys home in Hilo

Fire officials say a lighted candle caused a home in Hilo to go up in flames early Sunday. Fire crews arrived on scene at 5:15 a.m. to find the single-story home on Alani Street fully engulfed in flames. All occupants were out of the home and accounted for at the time, although two suffered injuries that included burns and smoke inhalation. The fire was under control just before 6:00 a.m. and extinguished 50 minutes later. Damages were estimated at $160,000.
