Hilo man charged in Puna heist

An 18-year old Hilo man has been charged with robbery and unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle after he and a female companion commandeered a man’s vehicle last week. A 26-year old Kea`au man told police around 2:00 a.m. Thursday that he picked up a couple hitchhiking near the intersection of Route 130 and Ainaloa Boulevard and drove them to Hawaiian Paradise Park, where the male hitchhiker assaulted him and drove off with the female in the victim’s vehicle. Police later located the abandoned vehicle and on Tuesday arrested and charged Michael Gary Perreira-Thompson, who is being held at the Hilo police cellblock on $35,000 bail pending his initial court appearance.
