Oahu coqui fighters need help finding frogs

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) — The people who fight harmful alien pests on Oahu are seeking the public's help to find coqui frogs.

The Oahu Invasive Species Committee is asking residents to go outside and listen for the frog's nocturnal mating call next Wednesday between 7:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.

They committee wants people to use the city's smartphone application, Honolulu 311, to report what they hear.

Coqui frogs reproduce quickly in Hawaii because they don't have natural predators here.

The committee says what starts out as one mating call could quickly turn into "an earsplitting chorus" if the frogs aren't reported immediately.

The frogs are well established on the Big Island. They've been sneaking their way to Oahu in plants, lumber, cars and other cargo.
