Island Bankruptcies continue to decline

The number of Hawai`i residents and businesses filing for bankruptcy fell in August for the 18th consecutive month. Data released by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court found that the 208 cases filed in August was down 22 percent from the 268 filed in August of 2011. Hawai`i County filings fell by 13 percent to 26 cases. Hawai`i bankruptcy filings have been trending lower since averaging 330 a month during the recent peak in 2010.
