HONOLULU (AP) — In the wake of a state audit blasting the Hawaii Department of Education's management of student transportation services, officials are looking at ways to cut costs.
In the short term, the department is looking at possibly staggering school day start and end times, which could save millions.
But the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported Wednesday officials say it could take years to complete an overhaul of student transportation.
An audit released Friday cited poor planning and oversight in allowing costs to skyrocket.
The department has hired at a consultant at a cost of nearly $110,000 to study the student transportation system and make recommendations for improvements.
