HONOLULU (AP) — University of Hawaii coaches are recommending that the man serving as acting athletic director be appointed to the post even though he says he won't apply for the job.
Vice President for Student Affairs Rockne Freitas has been acting athletic director since July 11 when Jim Donovan was placed on paid leave after a Stevie Wonder concert had to be canceled because the event wasn't approved by the artist or his representatives.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports nearly every university coach and many of their assistants have signed a letter recommending Freitas be immediately appointed.
Freitas is a former All-Pro NFL lineman. He would not comment and said he hadn't seen the letter.
The university has formed a committee to search for Donovan's replacement.
