HONOLULU (AP) — Former Gov. Linda Lingle's campaign is brushing off a surprise endorsement for her Democratic rival in Hawaii's U.S. Senate race.
Honolulu attorney John Carroll, said Friday that he backs U.S. Rep. Mazie Hirono after losing soundly to Lingle in the Republican primary earlier this month.
Lingle spokesman Lenny Klompus says Carroll was never a serious candidate and is trying to put himself in the limelight with an endorsement that isn't serious.
Carroll said Hirono is "the only option for Senate," adding that the idea of voting for Lingle is "worse than poor, it's just dangerous." He said he's fine with Lingle's character, but has no confidence she knows what she's doing. He said he has no idea how Lingle will vote on any major issues.
Lingle's campaign says the endorsement doesn't amount to a hill of beans.
