A 64-year-old Glenwood man is in police custody following a Monday standoff that temporarily closed a Fern Forrest road for the safety of area residents. Puna patrol officers responding to a 10:22 a.m. report of a man with a machete threatening his
neighbors on Kokokahi Road arrived to find the man barricaded inside the house and claiming he had a large machine gun. The Police Special Response Team negotiated all night with the suspect who emerged from the house around 5:00 a.m. Tuesday and
a confrontation ensued, in which an officer suffered minor injuries when the stairway he was standing on collapsed. Dasa Sivam was arrested on suspicion of terroristic threatening and is being held at the Hilo police cellblock Kokokahi Road, which was
closed to traffic from 1:00 p.m. Monday reopened shortly before 5:00 a.m. Tuesday.
