Big Island clerk calls for state elections review

HILO, Hawaii (AP) — Under fire for primary election poll opening delays, Hawaii County Clerk Jamae Kawauchi says she has asked the governor for an independent review of the state elections office.
She is also asking him to consider having the lieutenant governor's office oversee the office for the upcoming November general election.
After a scathing state elections report blasting her leadership, Kawauchi continues to say the office should take responsibility for its role in the mishaps that led to the governor issuing a proclamation to keep Big Island polls open 90 minutes later.
Kawauchi now says her concerns about the state elections office date back to September 2011.
State officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
The county council is expected to discuss the issue at a special meeting Monday.
