HONOLULU (AP) — Former Hawaii Gov. Ben Cayetano is in the hospital after suffering a bleeding ulcer, just days before the primary election in his quest to become mayor of Honolulu.
Cayetano's wife Vicky Cayetano drove her husband to the emergency room Sunday at the advice of his doctor. Campaign Manager Sam Callejo says the 72-year-old had cold sweats and blood in his stool.
The former governor is running for mayor as a candidate vowed to stop Honolulu's rail project. Callejo says the hospitalization won't affect his campaign.
Cayetano will remain at the Queen's Medical Center until Tuesday or Wednesday, pending tests and surgery.
Callejo says that because he suffered a similar episode in 1997 while governor, he knew the symptoms. He was hospitalized for five days back then.
