HONOLULU (AP) — Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Desmond Tutu has arrived in Honolulu, where he will be making several appearances.
The retired Anglican Church's archbishop of South Africa addressed the media Thursday at the Cathedral of St. Andrew in downtown Honolulu. Tutu is in Honolulu at the invitation of his friend and the cathedral's dean, Rev. Walter Brownridge.
On Friday, Tutu will participate in a discussion with PBS Hawaii President and CEO Leslie Wilcox. He'll give a lecture on Saturday. Then on Sunday, he will be the preacher for morning service and lead an interfaith prayer in the afternoon.
In 1994, after the end of apartheid and the election of Nelson Mandela as president, Tutu was appointed to chair a commission to investigate apartheid-era crimes. He continues advocating for peace and justice.
